PrivacyCheck automatically summarizes online privacy policies  provides consumers an overview of the ways in which companies use their personal data in a graphical, ‘ataglance’ fmat.

A U.S. Department of Justice rept issued July 2014 estimated that roughly 7% American households repted some type of identity theft in the previous year.  What do consumers need to know in der to protect themselves  their families from identity theft?  Infmation is key.  The me we know about how companies use our personal infmation, the better prepared we are when deciding whether  not to divulge it.  PrivacyCheck is a valuable resource that consumers can use to get an overview of the essential attributes of a company’s online privacy policy in way that is quick  easy to underst.

Federal  state laws require businesses to publicly post a privacy policy stating how they use customers’ Personally Identifiable Infmation (PII). Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has successfully prosecuted companies f deceptive  misleading practices when using consumers’ data in ways contrary to what is stated in their privacy policy. As a result, most companies’ privacy policies are easily accessible online.  The problem is that many people do not have time to read these y  sometimes technical documents.

PrivacyCheck is a browser addon intended to provide consumers an overview of the ways in which companies use their personal data in a graphical, ‘ataglance’ fmat.  Similar, currently available resources fall sht of this goal due to their lack of comprehensive web coverage.  F example, TRUSTe  P3P are signup services that require a business to enroll in der to participate,  multiple crowdsourced effts only provide infmation f websites that have been manually checked.

PrivacyCheck surpasses existing addons, apps,  certifications by using a Data Mining algithm to access the text of any webpage.  The user provides the URL f the company’s privacy policy  PrivacyCheck searches the page, returning icons that indicate the level of risk f several types of PII.  The list of items was compiled through the results of a January 2014 wkshop attended by professs of Law, Public Policy,  Computer Science  representatives of the FTC  the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), answering the question, “What Should Consumers Want to Know?”

PrivacyCheck插件离线安装方法

1.首先用户点击谷歌浏览器右上角的自定义及控制按钮，在下拉框中选择设置。

2.在打开的谷歌浏览器的扩展管理器最左侧选择扩展程序或直接输入：chrome://extensions/

3.找到自己已经下载好的Chrome离线安装文件xxx.crx，然后将其从资源管理器中拖动到Chrome的扩展管理界面中，这时候用户会发现在扩展管理器的中央部分中会多出一个”拖动以安装“的插件按钮。

4.下载 PrivacyCheckChrome插件v3.0.1版本到本地。

5.勾选开发者模式，点击加载已解压的扩展程序，将文件夹选择即可安装插件。

注意：最新版本的chrome浏览器直接拖放安装时会出现“程序包无效CRX-HEADER-INVALID”的报错信息，参照这篇文章即可解决
